Kamakura is rich in nature. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains on three sides and faces Sagami Bay to the south.
In 13th century Minamoto Yoritomo, a samurai warrior, established the first military government in Kamakura because it was a natural fortress. He constructed a lot of temples and shrines to protect his government.
In this tour I will take you to Kotokuin Temple with Great Buddha., Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, the heart of Kamakura city, Komachi Street with a lot of pretty souvenir shops and restaurants, and Engakuji Temple, a Zen temple.
The Great Buddha in Kotokuin Temple with the height of 13meters and 121 tons in weight is a National Treasure. Visitors may go inside the statue and see firsthand the sophisticated casting technology used in its construction. The statue, sitting against the backdrop of the blue sky and the green trees, is amazing.
Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu Shrine is the most popular shrine in Kamakura. The approach to the shrine is lined with a lot of cherry trees. In spring you can enjoy walking through the pink-colored tunnel of cherry blossoms.
Between Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and Kamakura station there is a pretty street with a lot of restaurants and shops selling traditional Japanese souvenirs. You can enjoy eating or shopping there. Engakuji Temple was built in 1282 to enshrine the souls of the warriors killed in the battles between Japan and Mongolia in 1274 and 1281.
