From November 1, 2026, Japan is scrapping its shop-now-save-instantly tax-free system. Instead of getting the consumption tax (10%, or 8% on food and drink) knocked off at the register, you’ll need to pay full price in the store and then claim the tax back at the airport on your way out of the country.
